Plan fixed deposit maturity, payout income, tax impact, and TDS before you lock money with a bank or NBFC.
TDS usually does not apply until annual interest crosses ₹40,000. Final tax is still based on your slab in the ITR.
| Period | Opening | Fresh Deposit | Gross Interest | Estimated Tax | Closing / Principal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | ₹5 L | ₹5 L | ₹36,984 | ₹3,698 | ₹5.33 L |
| Year 2 | ₹5.37 L | ₹0 | ₹39,719 | ₹3,972 | ₹5.73 L |
| Year 3 | ₹5.77 L | ₹0 | ₹42,657 | ₹4,266 | ₹6.15 L |
For cumulative FDs, this calculator compounds interest quarterly and shows both the bank maturity value and a post-tax estimate. For payout FDs, it treats interest as periodic income and shows the total receipts over the tenure.
As a tax check, FD interest is generally taxable at your slab rate. TDS deducted by the bank is only an advance tax credit, so a higher slab can still leave extra tax payable while a low-tax depositor may have a refund position.
Senior citizens can also consider Section 80TTB for eligible interest income. This calculator keeps the estimate simple, so verify final taxable income and deduction eligibility before filing.
Yes. FD interest is taxable as income from other sources at your slab rate. TDS is only a deduction by the bank, not the final tax calculation.
Banks generally check annual interest against Rs 40,000 for regular depositors and Rs 50,000 for senior citizens. This calculator uses that threshold as a planning estimate.
Cumulative FD reinvests interest and pays it at maturity. Payout FD pays interest monthly, quarterly, or annually, so the maturity receipt is usually the original principal.
No. Premature closure can reduce the rate and may attract a penalty. Use the actual bank closure statement for final numbers.
