How to read this TDS calculator

TDS is not a separate tax. It is tax collected in advance by the payer and credited against your PAN, so the final position is known only after you compute total income and file the return.

For FD and RD interest, the practical questions are threshold, PAN status, senior citizen limit, and Form 15G/15H eligibility. A 10% deduction can still be too low for someone in a 20% or 30% slab.

Always reconcile the TDS shown here with Form 26AS, AIS, bank certificates, and your income tax computation before filing.

Quick questions

What is the TDS threshold on FD interest?

For this calculator, bank FD interest is checked against the current planning thresholds used from FY 2025-26: Rs 50,000 for regular depositors and Rs 1,00,000 for senior citizens. Verify the applicable year and bank category before filing.

Is TDS the final tax on FD interest?

No. FD interest is added to your total income and taxed at your slab rate. TDS is only an advance tax credit; you may still have extra tax payable or a refund.

What happens if PAN is not submitted?

Banks generally deduct TDS at a higher rate when PAN is not available. This calculator uses 20% without PAN and 10% with PAN for FD interest planning.

Can Form 15G or 15H stop TDS?

A valid Form 15G or Form 15H can prevent TDS when your tax conditions allow it. Do not submit the declaration if your final tax liability is not nil.

Does splitting FDs avoid tax?

Splitting deposits may reduce deduction by a particular bank, but it does not remove tax liability. Interest still appears in AIS/Form 26AS and must be reported in the ITR.
